A Study on "Good Care" Perceived by Direct Care Workers of Nursing Facilities

Abstract
The study examined the characteristics and obstacles of ¡¯good care¡¯ focused on the perception of direct care workers caring frail elders in nursing facilities in Busan area. The data of the study was drawn from in-depth interviews and a focus group interview with 12 direct care workers. Qualitative research method was adopted to explore relatively unknown experiences of care workers in nursing facilities. As the result of the analysis, 91 concepts and 11 categories were derived, which indicated the characteristics and obstacles of ¡¯good care¡¯. The most frequently shown concepts were categorized as ¡¯family like¡¯ care. The categories were also shown such as individualized care, encouraging independence, and improvement in physical and psychological conditions. The participants perceived heavy work load, deteriorated work conditions, unprofessional work, and demanding families as the obstacles of ¡¯good care¡¯. Several suggestions were made to reflect the insights of the participants: introducing person centered care, proliferating small scale facilities, ameliorating work conditions of direct care workers, and empowering them by adopting their opinions to improve nursing services.
